Album Review #2: Lizzo - Cuz I Love You

TITLE          Cuz I Love You

ARTIST        Lizzo

RELEASE DATE       April 19, 2019

LABEL                    Atlantic Records

NO. OF TRACKS      11

When deciding who to pick for my next album review, I simply went onto iTunes and looked upon the biggest albums of the moment...and low and behold I find Cuz I Love You from Lizzo. So, I thought...why not? I have been wanting to see what Lizzo is all about for a while now and this album seems to be well liked by the general public. So, I sat down and took a quick listen (it is only 33 minutes)...and some things certainly surprised me. So, without further ado, here are my thoughts after hearing Lizzo's Cuz I Love You. Enjoy!

Track #1: Cuz I Love You
Grade: A

A great album opener in and of itself. Lizzo boasts an energetic and lively sound while showcasing her soulful voice. I really can't see a reason not to find this as anything but a great pull in to this body of work. Not to mention, the instrumentals and overall rock vibe here are super cool and fit in rather nicely with the other dynamics of the song. This is definitely one of the high points of this album, and it is just barely getting started.

Track #2: Like A Girl
Grade: A-

While a small step down from the album's opener, Lizzo definitely does not disappoint with Like A Girl. It is certainly a song with a message of female empowerment, if you look at the lyrics closely enough. With that set aside though, she is able to acceptably showcase her versatility in terms of vocal ability. She raps rather nicely on the verses and sings with confidence through the chorus. While the signing isn't top notch, there seems to be no other flaws here. Like A Girl is an acceptable second album track in my book.

Track #3: Juice
Grade: B

I'm pretty sure most of us have all heard this one by now. It is the general consensus (as it seems to me) that most people find this song okay. And that is what I feel with this song. Juice is a very flashy song with a message of self-appreciation and having fun. Lizzo continues to show her vocal versatility here, as she sing-raps throughout the length of this track. This song levels at a similar place as Like A Girl. I don't find the rapping the most appealing with this track, which lowers its grade a little bit. However, it does present an enjoyable listen every now and then.

Track #4: Soulmate
Grade: D+

Certainly not one of the album's high points. Soulmate stays true to the message about self-appreciation, which is about the only thing I like in this song. You can certainly feel the energy of this song. However, it is very diminished by the below-the-mark offerings from Lizzo here. Her rapping and vocals here sound very clunky and are not cohesive with the overall production of the track. It feels as if Soulmate was sloppily put together and just simply added to the album for filler.

Track #5: Jerome
Grade: A

After the less-than-impressive Soulmate, Lizzo brings things back on top with the soulful Jerome. In this song, she spectacularly belts out a tune about a romantic connection that had some sort of falling out. This is quite easily a high point of the album. With its simplicity and emotional feel along with its simple yet meaningful track production--it is hard to find something not to like about Jerome (the song, of course).

Track #6: Cry Baby
Grade: B

Next up is another okay song. However, it is nothing special. This song has a nice pop rock vibe, and is pretty reminiscent of some older tracks of that genre. I feel as if her versatility is shown pretty well here. Cry Baby shows Lizzo noticeably transitioning from vocals to rap pretty effortlessly, which is the track's high point. In terms of vocal quality, it's not top notch here, but it is certainly acceptable.

Track #7: Tempo (ft. Missy Elliott)
Grade: C

This song is kind of weak lyric wise, but the production is pretty good here. Lizzo doesn't reach full potential here, and neither does Missy Elliott. Both kind of fall flat at some points in this song. I will give Lizzo points here because this song has a pretty sick vibe beat-wise, and the energy here is pretty noticeable. The rest of the song could use some work.

Track #8: Exactly How I Feel (ft. Gucci Mane)
Grade: D-

Exactly How I Feel is the worst off of this album. This song was very poorly put together, and is pretty lacking in quality vocal, production, and lyric wise. Gucci Mane was a completely unnecessary person to bring into this album, as he offered nothing. Lizzo doesn't sound good here, and her constant repetition of the phrase "that's exactly how I feel" made this song ten times harder to sit through. Production here is messy and clashes too much throughout the short length of this song. Lyrics sound as if they were just made up on the spot. All in all, not impressed.

Track #9: Better In Color
Grade: A-

After that mess, we have Better In Color, which is a pretty stand-out track. Her vocals here are showcased very well, and I enjoy the message that this song's lyrics have to convey. This song has kind of a soulful pop vibe, and I totally enjoy it. Lizzo is able to successfully blend several genres of music in this one song, and is yet another example of her versatile talent.

Track #10: Heaven Help Me
Grade: B+

Heaven Help Me is probably the deepest cut on this album, and I am glad that she was able to give us a more reflective and emotional track here. Her vocals are good here and the lyrics are carefully and nicely constructed. Production here is good, too. What may be my favorite part though, is Lizzo's flute feature on this track. That just increases the likeability of Heaven Help Me tenfold. She is very talented with the flute, and I am glad that we got to hear a bit of that instrumental crossover with this track. It was the perfect fit.

Track #11: Lingerie
Grade: A-

Finally, we have reached the album closer. Lingerie was the best choice to end off this album. I just felt a sense of satisfaction with this body of work after hearing this closing track. Lizzo showcases beautiful soulful vocals on this track. My only issue with it is that I wish she could have shown off more lyrical variety here. But, overall, this one is pretty top notch and certainly not something you want to overlook.

The Verdict: With this being her first high-profile and label-backed album, Lizzo definitely did a fine job. It has a few flaws, but overall, she is able to plead her case and show that she undeniably has some talent. This album is certainly listenable, with the exception of a couple of tracks. Cuz I Love You as a whole delivers an undeniable energy of an artist who is trying to make a name for herself.

High Points:
  • Cuz I Love You
  • Like A Girl
  • Jerome
  • Better In Color
  • Lingerie

Acceptable Work:
  • Juice
  • Cry Baby
  • Heaven Help Me

Needs Improvement:
  • Tempo (ft. Missy Elliott)

Low Points:
  • Soulmate
  • Exactly How I Feel (ft. Gucci Mane)

New Entrants

~ Our lone entrant this week comes from Katy Perry with Small Talk. I elaborated on my thoughts with this one last week when it debuted on Hit-Bound, so I'm not going to go on and on about it. I find this song very forgettable and fairly bland. Katy brings it back a step after releasing Never Really Over. Her vocals here are okay, I guess. But everything else is just boring. The production is not good and the lyrical content misses the mark and is heavily reminiscent of songs off of her worst album, Witness. The only thing really holding it together right now (for me, at least) is the vocals. Other than that, this song would already be in red. However, that time will likely come soon enough.

Hit-Bound
  • Ed Sheeran/Khalid - Beautiful People
  • Waterparks - Dream Boy (DEBUT)
  • Dominic Fike - 3 Nights
  • Zara Larsson - What A Time
  • Panic! At The Disco - Roaring 20s
  • Lizzo - Good As Hell
  • Jax Jones & Bebe Rexha - Harder
  • Twenty One Pilots - The Hype
  • Jonas Brothers - Only Human
  • Ellie Goulding & Juice WRLD - Hate Me
  • Alec Benjamin - Jesus In LA
  • Taylor Swift - Lover (DEBUT)
  • Ariana Grande & Social House - Boyfriend
  • Thomas Rhett - Look What God Gave Her
  • Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep?
~ Two Hit-Bound debuts this week. One of which Hits 1 is hyping way too much when it is incredibly irrelevant and pretty annoying (in my opinion). That would be Dream Boy from Waterparks. I think pretty much everything about this song is generic. The electronic influence here is very noticed and needs to be toned down, because it makes the song ten times worse. I could do without the annoying ass robotic laser beam sound effects. The vocals here are not that good either and the lyrics are tasteless and unoriginal. I hope Hits 1 doesn't try to make this song a big thing (AKA giving it a long countdown tenure), when it is completely irrelevant to hit music and is far from listenable.

~ Thankfully, we got a breath of fresh air, as Taylor Swift released the title track from her new album, Lover, which surfaces on Friday. I'm kind of disappointed that they had to get rid of The Archer, but I get it. That one was just a promotional single, this one is not. Lover showcases sweet lyrics and top-notch vocals from Taylor as she endearingly and effortlessly sings about being in love. I am hopeful that this track will debut on the countdown. It is a total win for Taylor. It may just be my new favorite song released ahead from the album. I'll have to listen to it a few more times first, though. :)

My Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Taylor Swift - Lover
2. Jonas Brothers - Only Human
3. Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep?
4. Ed Sheeran/Khalid - Beautiful People
5. Thomas Rhett - Look What God Gave Her

Small Blurbs

~ We have a continuation of the #1 song this week, so I'm not really going to talk about that. What I am going to talk about is the unnecessary jumps into the top 5 from Sucker, Hey Look Ma, I Made It, and Cool. Especially the latter of the two. I'm not completely sick of Sucker yet, so I guess I don't care as much as the other two. I have had enough of Hits 1's over-hyping of Panic! At The Disco at this point. It is becoming quite ridiculous. This song was barely even a hit, so I don't understand why this radio station is glorifying it so much. It was right having it out of the top 10 last week. As for Cool, I'm more just annoyed that it had to make an unnecessary leap after weeks of doing nothing. This song has gained a bit more traction recently, so I can't complain too much about its validity "hit-wise". However, all I know is that it is generic pop and is one of the pieces of clutter holding this countdown back. So, I would prefer if it were lower.

~ What I am happy about is the jump of You Need To Calm Down back into the top 10. It is probably the best song in the top 20 right now, so I would prefer that it continue to receive this attention.

~ I knew that jump from If We Have Each Other wouldn't last. Alec Benjamin's music hasn't garnered enough attention this past year for him to hold the #3 title on this countdown (especially with his least successful song).

~ I am very pleased to see Mother's Daughter already in the top 20. This will surely up the top 20 score a few points after we hit a record low last week.

~ The worst song on the countdown and the best song on the countdown one after another doesn't happen all that often. I thought that was interesting to point out. While I'm speaking on it, I'm super happy that Find U Again made a decent second week jump. However, I'm super mad that The Git Up is slowly rising in the ranks. Let's change that. I don't get what people find so great about this song. I heard this song what felt like one hundred times on the radio while I was driving this week, and I wanted to tear my ears from my head a little more every time.

~ Well, I saw that massive drop from Truth Hurts coming. I knew Hits 1 wouldn't glorify it too much. Even though it is the #4 song in the country right now. I'm not complaining, I'm just once again commenting on how flawed this radio stattion's logic can be sometimes.

~ Hits 1 gave Old Town Road a little more attention, considering that it has been the #1 song in America for almost nineteen weeks now (how unrightfully so). However, they finally decided to allow it to drop and I couldn't be happier. Let's get this song out of here.

~ I don't really care all that much that Walk Me Home left this week. It has become a pretty "middle-of-the-road" song for me. I was kind of starting to get sick of it anyways.

New Entrants

~ First up this week is Asher Angel with One Thought Away. While this song is good, it's not amazing. However, I'll take it for what it is. Asher Angel is essentially another one of those teenage singers trying to make it big (like an Austin Brown). However, he actually sounds okay, while Austin Brown does not. I find the chorus to this song kind of catchy, but other than that nothing really pops out. It's pretty forgettable, and I don't think it will last long here, so onto the next one.

~ Next is Miley Cyrus with Mother's Daughter. This song certainly isn't her best work, but I enjoy it to a certain extent. Miley has a significant level of confidence on this track and her vocals are pretty solid here as well. This is definitely different from some of the stuff we have heard from her before, and I like it. I like that Miley can usually bring something unique to the table and different from the last song that we heard from her. So, I am hoping that this song will stay for a while.

~ Following that, we have a song that I am glad is finally garnering some attention. That song would be SHAED's Trampoline. Sometime last year, I heard this song in an Apple commercial, and did some digging to find the full-length track--and I was surprised. It's a very simplistic, but dream-like song. She has a nice voice here and I enjoy the overall production on this song. While I liked it a little more a few months ago, it still has managed to hold up well. So, I won't mind if this sticks around for a while.

~ Right after that, we have my new favorite song on the countdown--as Mark Ronson and Camila Cabello's Find U Again finally debuts. I was getting worried that this song would not make it to the countdown, but I am very glad that it is here. Mark Ronson does a nice job production-wise here and Camila  has a nice sound (however, the auto-tune is a little over-done in some parts). I just think that this song is a super catchy and pretty well put together Crying In The Club reminiscent track. My one wish is that it sticks it out here for a little while.

~ Next is Stephen Puth with Look Away. I think this song is good, but again it is nothing that really seems to hold up well. It is pretty forgettable, and a bit of a step down from Sexual Vibe. That song had better vocals and production in my personal opinion. Look Away is good for a listen every now and then, but is nothing that I will go too far out of my way to hear. I don't really care how it does here.

~ Finally, we have OneRepublic with Rescue Me. Personally, I believe that these guys hit their peak a little while ago. Their music in the recent years has really been quite underwhelming. Rescue Me is no exception. Sure, I found it kind of catchy at first, but that quickly faded. Ryan Tedder sounds pretty boring here and the production on this track is nothing special. I guess this song will be fine here for a while, because it's not bad, it's just okay.

Entrant Rankings:
  1. Mark Ronson/Camila Cabello - Find U Again
  2. Miley Cyrus - Mother's Daughter
  3. SHAED - Trampoline
  4. Stephen Puth - Look Away
  5. Asher Angel - One Thought Away
  6. OneRepublic - Rescue Me

Hit-Bound
  • Jax Jones & Bebe Rexha - Harder
  • Panic! At The Disco - Roaring 20s (DEBUT)
  • Zara Larsson - All The Time
  • Ellie Goulding & Juice WRLD - Hate Me
  • Twenty One Pilots - The Hype (DEBUT)
  • Taylor Swift - The Archer
  • Alec Benjamin - Jesus In LA (DEBUT)
  • Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep?
  • Katy Perry - Small Talk (DEBUT)
  • Ariana Grande & Social House - Boyfriend (DEBUT)
  • Thomas Rhett - Look What God Gave Her
  • Ed Sheeran/Khalid - Beautiful People
  • Dominic Fike - 3 Nights
  • Jonas Brothers - Only Human
  • Lizzo - Good As Hell (DEBUT)
~ First up this week is Panic! At The Disco with Roaring 20s. No surprise, this song really isn't all that good. I feel as if this most recent era from Panic! At The Disco has been pretty underwhelming for the most part. I also don't understand why Hits 1 feels the need to pick up yet another non-single from this album.  Dancing's Not A Crime was enough. We don't need another. I am just hoping that this doesn't end up on the countdown, because I know that I am going to end up hating it at some point.

~ Next up is another non-single that Hits 1 happened to pick up on this week. That would be The Hype by Twenty One Pilots. I also happen to think that this one is pretty underwhelming. The vocals here leave much to be desired and the overall production is kind of boring. So yeah, I wouldn't mind if this one didn't make it on the countdown.

~ Another debut, another underwhelming song. Alec Benjamin's Jesus In LA is no different from the Hit-Bound entrants we've discussed this far. His vocals here are not really good here and the rest of the song is incredibly bland. This song will probably be in red sooner rather than later.

~ Next we have another that will probably been in red sooner rather than later. Katy Perry makes a debut this week with her new single, Small Talk--and honestly, it just isn't that good. The lyrical offerings here are pretty pathetic and for the most part this song reminds me of another generic song off of her last album, Witness. There's literally nothing to it. Her voice here is fine, I guess, but that really is the only thing keeping this song afloat for me right now.

~ Next up is Boyfriend from Ariana Grande and Social House. This is certainly a step up from the other three singles that we have heard from her this year, but again I don't think I'll end up liking this song for long. It's in green now, but given the extent that her other songs from this year held up with me, I doubt this song will surprise me. I also could do without the Social House contribution (maybe someone else could have been better for this track). Ariana sounds fine here and I don't find the concept bad, I just don't know how long this one is going to stick with me. For now, I'm enjoying it for the most part.

~ Finally, we have Lizzo with another older song of hers (even older than Truth Hurts)--Good As Hell. I'm actually pretty glad that this song is here. This one certainly has a better appeal than Truth Hurts, and her vocals are pretty good here. The production here is nice and upbeat. Yeah, I like this. It was a good way to end Hit-Bound this week.

My Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Taylor Swift - The Archer
2. Jonas Brothers - Only Human
3. Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep?
4. Thomas Rhett - Look What God Gave Her
5. Zara Larsson - All The Time

One Blurb Away

~ If I Can't Have You is still at the summit, and honestly, I'm fine with it. It is the best contender in my book (out of the top 10 right now)--other than the #8 and #9, which likely have no shot at all. As long as we are keeping the truly bad songs away, what's the harm?

~ I have no idea what prompted that jump from If We Have Each Other, but it needs to be undone next week. This song is seriously one of the most irrelevant tracks on this countdown, and I don't appreciate it being referred as the "#3 most popular song in North America"--maybe #333 but not #3. It honestly has no place on this countdown at all.

~ Speaking of big jumps, Truth Hurts made a pretty big leap into the top 10 this week. I honestly don't care because this song isn't the worst thing ever. I personally am just happy that we have this blue song in the place of a red song. I am okay with it just as long as this one doesn't hit #1 (which I doubt it will).

~ I appreciate that Señorita took a little bit of a leap back into the top 10, and that Someone You Loved did as well. I have actually grown to like both of these songs a little more in the past couple of weeks. I'm not sure it will last, but I'm enjoying them for now.

~ AJR is now in the top 20 with 100 Bad Days. This isn't good. Not at all. Please. Go. Back. From. Where. You. Came.

~ And just when I thought that So Am I was going to become the next Sweet But Psycho, it didn't and I'm thankful for that. I hope that this drop lasts.

~ Every little jump that is made by The Git Up makes me angrier and angrier. This song really doesn't deserve any attention. Blanco Brown is not good, and not a true country artist, no matter how much he tries to make it seem like he is. True country music is pretty much dead anyways, so I really don't understand what he's trying to go for with this song.

~ We have now heard High Hopes twice in the same countdown, due to it being the #1 song at this time last year. One listen is far too much for this song, two is just absolute torture at this point.

~ Finally! With You has dropped! Next step is to get this song off the countdown, because it is honestly one of the biggest issues here right now. Our biggest goal for this song is to clear as much clutter as we possibly can.

~ Something kind of strange happened this week. I don't absolutely hate Sweet But Pyscho anymore. I'm sure it will change. But, I heard it on the radio the other day and just didn't find it that bad anymore. It actually got to the point that I was singing along to it at some parts, but that may be just do the fact that it is quite possibly the biggest earworm of 2019.

~ As for our exits, I'm sad to see Summer Days and Paradise leave. They both deserved better here. Mama's House was getting kind of annoying. It was definitely time for Close To Me and Dancing With A Stranger. One had become incredibly annoying and the other had become incredibly boring. As for Chlorine, its exit was going to happen at some point, and I don't really care to see it go.

New Entrants

~ The only song that we get this week is 100 Bad Days from AJR. At first, I somewhat enjoyed this song, but that quickly changed. This one does not hold up well. I soon realized that this song was pretty heavily flawed. The production here isn't the worst, but their voices aren't that tolerable at all. The lyrical content is kind of weird as I had come to realize and it really is just poorly structured. However, this is pretty much always the drill when it comes to my opinions on these guys' songs. I like them at first, but pretty quickly grow sick of them. They don't normally last long here either, so I'm not too concerned. I'm just a little annoyed that out of all the good songs on Hit-Bound right now, we just received a space filler.

Hit-Bound
  • Dominic Fike - 3 Nights
  • OneRepublic - Rescue Me
  • Mark Ronson/Camila Cabello - Find U Again
  • Ellie Goulding & Juice WRLD - Hate Me
  • Stephen Puth - Look Away
  • Sam Smith - How Do You Sleep?
  • Jonas Brothers - Only Human
  • SHAED - Trampoline
  • Jax Jonas & Bebe Rexha - Harder
  • Taylor Swift - The Archer (DEBUT)
  • Thomas Rhett - Look What God Gave Her
  • Miley Cyrus - Mother's Daughter
  • Ed Sheeran/Khalid - Beautiful People (DEBUT)
  • Asher Angel - One Thought Away
  • Zara Larsson - All The Time
~ Our first Hit-Bound debut this week is from none other than Taylor Swift with The Archer. This is probably the most vocally sound song that has been released this era thus far. However, I still very much like ME!, so I'm not sure how to feel about this song in comparison with that one. I do know that this one is a step up from You Need To Calm Down, though, which was certainly not her best work. I have heard people comparing this song to her lyrical, vocal, and emotional masterpiece known as All Too Well (which is quite possibly her best song ever). I say that The Archer is certainly a very vocally sound and lyrically sound track. It has a similar emotion, but it in no way tops some of her more emotional songs. However, this poses a very promising sound of what we will hear from Taylor's new album--which will be released in just a few short weeks.

~ The other Hit-Bound debut this week comes from Ed Sheeran (once again) and Khalid with Beautiful People. I like this song. Both artists sound good on this track and the production is pretty good as well. This is pretty much a standard Ed Sheeran track and this is what I like to hear from him. Lyrics, vocals, and production here are all good. I would like to see this one debut on the countdown.

My Top 5 Hit-Bound Picks
1. Mark Ronson/Camila Cabello - Find U Again
2. Taylor Swift - The Archer
3. Jonas Brothers - Only Human
4. Thomas Rhett - Look What God Gave Her
5. Ed Sheeran/Khalid - Beautiful People

100 Bad Blurbs (not really...I hope...)

~ I am very happy that Shawn Mendes has reclaimed the #1 spot with I Can't Have You. I would much rather have this one be #1 at this point over Who Do You Love.

~ You Need To Calm Down has made a pretty significant leap this week. I am guessing that this will be pretty much follow the same routine as Someone You Loved's big jump a couple of weeks ago. This jump was pretty random, so I'm really just not seeing it lasting long.

~ I'm not really sure why So Am I had to jump in the top 10. For weeks and weeks, this song just remained in the 20's. I don't understand why all of a sudden this song is in the top 10. It is completely irrelevant. Ava Max did not make it big with this song. It is absolutely nowhere near as popular as Sweet But Psycho was, so I'm not really understanding why we're giving it all this attention.

~ All I have to say is that #25 to #32 (with the exception of the incredibly wholly superior ME!) was an incredibly painful listen. Yet another indication of the ridiculous amount of clutter on this countdown.

~ As far as our exit this week, I am happy that 7 Rings has finally left. It has been in the bottom 5 of this countdown for far too long. It is very disappointing that we had to get another bad song in its place, but whatever.
